Information

Middle school is the grand transitional time for students, as you parents of middle school students are well aware. The Guidance Department has prepared programs for each grade level that will provide each student their own unique opportunity to grow. We are gearing up for an exciting year of academic, social and emotional growth for all students.

Sixth Grade: We are training interested students to be Peer Mediators. Students interested in the Peer Mediation training program will be trained during their study skills class for 20-30 minutes a week over a five-week period. The training begins in October. When the training is complete, mediators will work in teams of two to help 5th and 6th graders solve problems. An adult will be present during all mediations, but the students will facilitate the process. Any student can request mediation by coming to guidance and filling out a Peer Mediation Request Form. Mediations will take place during Study Skills for 20-30 minutes. Students may begin requesting peer mediation in November.

Seventh Grade: Students will be invited to participate in a sequence of topics that address understanding diversity in the learning environment (different learning styles, special education, multiple intelligences, personality styles, and achievement) that help kids learn more about themselves and others.

Eighth Grade: Last October, 8th graders created a portfolio in the online Florida Choices website. After creating the portfolio, students took an interest inventory. The results from this inventory will be used for high school and post-high school planning. 8th grade parents: look for a letter, which will provide more information about scheduling a meeting in November with a counselor to discuss high school options.

Additionally, interested 8th grade students have had the opportunity to sign up for small groups ranging from: Healthy Relationships - the Dating Game, Healthy Lifestyles, Career Planning, Beat the Blues, Study Skills- becoming a better student, Time Management- balancing your school and leisure activities, Managing Stress, and Positive Self Esteem. The eighth graders who have expressed interest in small group topics will meet during advisement and/or study skills for approximately six weeks for thirty minutes each session.
